How we score μ / σ / L.
We use a doubles Elo with uncertainty to track your skill. μ is your skill estimate, σ is how sure we are, and L = μ − 2σ is the conservative ladder score used for rankings.
Quick formula
- Team rating = average μ of both partners.
- Expected score from Elo curve (400 divisor); K = 24 scaled by margin.
- After each result: μ nudges toward outcome, σ shrinks by 3.0% until the floor.
- Between matches: σ slowly inflates for inactivity, capped at 350.
Dashboard ratings (your card)
Lifetime, stored state
- Uses the saved μ and σ on your player record, updated every time a match result is recorded.
- σ shown on the dashboard already includes inactivity inflation from your last played date to today.
- Good for: your current conservative standing (L) and momentum after all matches ever played.

Windowed replays
- For each window we replay only the matches inside that time span from the baseline μ/σ.
- After replaying, σ is inflated to “now” for inactivity within that window.
- Result: μ and σ on the weekly/monthly/annual boards can differ from your lifetime dashboard values.
Common scenarios
Why is σ higher on the weekly board?
Fewer matches in that window means less certainty. The replay starts from the baseline, then inflates σ to today.
Why is L different from my dashboard?
Your dashboard L uses all historical results. Windowed boards exclude older games and can rank you lower or higher depending on recent form.
What about match timestamps?
Ratings are applied using the match’s scheduled/session start time (or tournament start). If a result was entered late, inactivity is measured from that played time, not entry time.
Tips
- Play regularly to shrink σ and stabilize your L.
- Check the “All-Time” leaderboard to compare directly with your dashboard L.
- Windowed boards are for current form; dashboard is your lifetime baseline.
